Contemporary fibre practice
Badimia therapeutic weaving is an emerging fibre practice shaped by deep listening, identity, pressure, reconnection and the quiet knowledge carried in our hands.
The practice
Sometimes our hands begin the conversation before our words are ready.
Bianca originally began weaving, largely self taught, as a way to decompress from the emotional demands of therapeutic professional work and the pressure of undertaking a PhD.
What began as a personal practice for slowing down, creating space and settling the mind gradually became something more significant. Weaving opened another pathway for deep listening, reflection and reconnection.
As a Badimia (Yamatji) and Ukrainian woman living and working on Kaurna Country, her work considers connection and disconnection, silence and story, tension and release, memory, Country and the ways making can create space for reflection.
Bianca describes herself as a Badimia Therapeutic Weaver and Fibre Artist. This describes both who she is and the lens through which she approaches making. It does not suggest that every weaving technique or material used within her work is traditional Badimia cultural practice. Cultural integrity, relationship and respect remain central to her work.
